Many have been at this a lot longer than myself and have probably seen and collected rare gas Regular/Ethyl pump plate sets. It sometimes drives you crazy having one sign and knowing there is another out there somewhere that would complete your collection. Sometimes you have to let it go, but sometimes all the planets line up and you are able to find that missing “needle in a haystack”.

I have posted a couple of my pics of the Ethyl/Regular “sets” that I have been able to put together. I believe the Platinum set belong to Texgas here in Texas. The HiArc and White Flash of course are Atlantic. I was wondering what rare sets others have been able to put together?

Here is another Regular/Ethyl set that is very common and I know there are many variations. Nothing like the killers I am seeing!

I don't have any rare sets worth posting here, but I can pair one with Stephen's original post. This Platinum is a nice one (and yes Stephen, it is out of Texas - the back of mine is ink stamped "Property of Texas Gas Corporation.")

Steve, I wonder what the dates on the Platinum plates would be (1960s?). Which leads me to ask the question, what was the difference between your square Super Premium Sign and my rectangular Premium Sign? Were they producing 3 grades of gas at the time of the sign usage or is your square Super Premium of a different time than my rectangular Premium sign?

i like the idea of having sets. Find one and then the hunt is on for the other. Having a specific item to find has always been my favorite part.

They were user for a short period - between 1941 to 1946, and only by the east coast parts of the company.
From 1946-1962, the porcelain shield signs were used by the different divisions.

The Mobilgas has a 1941 date and the special has a 1946 date and there is also a difference in appearance as the special Pegasus has a blue out line. This became also present at the Pegasus on the shields (except on the west coast shields).
As I understand they were - in parallell with the rectangular tin signs used by Wadhams - the first pump plates used by Mobil. Before this there had only been decals.. pls correct me if I am wrong.

Guess they could be, I just always considered them very uncommon. Someone give some insight on them.

These 2 Dixie plates are the only 2 I've ever seen that weren't severely faded.

Although not super rare, the mint ones are quite tough to find. You can see them on the gas pumps of my parent's station. This was around 1960-61 when Shell had bought out North Star and were about to rebrand all the stations. Unfortunately I was only collecting comic books and toy cars back then. My 50 cent allowance only went so far, lol.

If only we knew then what we know now!!! But then we would be like “Biff” in Back to the Future 2 where he got the book of all sports games results in the past! I guess we are better off just the way things are! Or maybe I am thinking about this to long and hard!!

Dale...sorry for the misunderstanding...I was not saying your Super Chief was not rare...I was simply adding another entry to this thread. My first Ethyl/Regular set was the Texaco Fire Chief (regular) and Sky Chief (Ethyl or Premium)....as shown.
Thanks!
